India finally won its first world title after 13 long years when Rohit Sharma’s side defeated South Africa, perennial runners-ups of T20 World Cup finals since 2008.
The Proteas have assembled a versatile squad, one which doesn’t rely on one or two marquee players alone and that has consistently found ways to win from difficult positions. Here we will discuss India vs South Africa matches.
ODI 1
ODI (One Day International) format has revolutionized cricket into an exciting, fast-paced and rewarding watch since its introduction on 5 January 1971. Since its introduction, fans all around the world have been delighted by this short but thrilling combination of skill and strategy compared to longer Test matches. The inaugural ODI took place at Melbourne Cricket Ground between WSC Australia in wattle gold against WSC West Indies in coral pink; since then ODIs have proven an ideal balance between traditional five-day Tests and Twenty20 matches in terms of length.
ODI cricket is a team sport in which the best team usually triumphs. But in an ODI format, teams are not evenly matched, often coming down to hitting more sixes and fours than their opponent. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are two successful batsmen who have scored multiple one-day double centuries; making the ODI format popular and watched while being lucrative for teams and sponsors alike.
Changes have been made to ODI rules to make the game more exciting for batsmen. For instance, in 2008 the International Cricket Council introduced two powerplays for each innings; one is bowling while the other is batting; teams can decide between using either or both powerplays at their discretion. Furthermore, fielders outside the thirty-yard circle have been reduced from five to four.
As part of these changes, the ICC has also altered how balls are used during One Day International matches. Prior to 2011, they would only swap it once during an innings; now, however, two replacements occur during each match, providing spinners with greater benefits while upsetting some fans of ODI cricket.
India are at the forefront of developing One Day International cricket around the world and India are at its forefront. India have enjoyed unparalleled success with this format over their history, winning more than 50 of their ODIs to remain as top-ranked ODI team worldwide for more than ten years now.
ODI 2
One Day Internationals are played over 50 overs by 11-player teams consisting of one nation. To win an ODI match, one side must score more than 100 runs to claim victory; most matches between nations take the form of stand-alone series but triangular and quadrangular series are also common; the ICC outlines which tournaments each nation must compete in each season.
Fielding restrictions in One Day International cricket prevent teams from setting wholly defensive fields, restricting teams’ options for creating defensive settings. During Powerplay 1 and 2, displayed as P1 and P2, bowling sides may only employ two fielders outside the thirty-yard circle – with at least one fielder acting in close-catching positions such as slip, gully or short point if required.
India and South Africa produced an incredible contest at St Port Elizabeth during their second ODI of their three-match series. South Africa claimed victory by eight wickets to level it 1-1 after Aiden Markram won the toss and elected for India to bat first; when India were all out for 211 with Tony de Zorzi scoring an unbeaten unbeaten 119, Nandre Burger and Reeza Hendricks each took two wickets before SA chased down their target with almost nine overs left on the clock in an impressive display that further illustrated why limited-overs cricket remains such a good advertisement of limited-overs cricket!
